After the Civil War, four geological surveys of the western United States were formed by four different educated and ambitious men. Emmett Evanoff will share about how all four surveys met and overlapped in Colorado, where some of the greatest geologists, photographers, and landscape artists of the 19th century endured hard condition in the mountains. These surveys not only set the standard for geologic mapping, but congress merged them into the U.S. Geological Survey, with a major research center in Denver.
